Yesterday, the temperature here in Amsterdam was around -7 most of the day. Today it's a balmy -5 degrees. The canals are starting to freeze over and I've been watching birds run across the ice. Twice I've seen garbage bags resting on the canal ice. It's going to be a very cold winter.

Apparently the last time it was this cold was 14 years ago and they had inter-city ice skating contests on the canals. Sounds like fun, but yikes! On Saturday, Leïla and I are supposed to be traveling to Alphen aan den Rijn for dinner at a friend's house. Looking forward to the dinner, but not looking forward to the trip.
I don't know what 'alphen' means (Alps?), but I can make out the rest: on the Rhine. Correct?
