If you must leave the US and you're happy with South America, consider Uruguay. Requirements:

  • Clean criminal record
  • $500 a month income

How much easier do you want it?

Basically, show up on a tourist visa, open a bank account, contact an immigration lawyer and apply to stay (pdf).

Your posts really make me appreciate how lucky we are in Europe that we can decode to settle anywhere we want (within the EU).

That is definitely one of the things I love about Europe. So many cultures and ideas available. It's one of the reasons Americans and Europeans will never quite think the same.
