It is a lovely story; however, I cannot help not feeling « sad ».
He made a choice and now he has to deal with consequences.
I see it more as a lesson of life “stand up for what you believe on, for what’s really matter for you” than a heartbroken story.

He was a child when he made a decision he regrets. I can hardly fault someone for making mistakes when children.

Though I confess I would like to think I would have asked for the book back and refused to be with someone who would treat me like that.
